United States Navy flight helmet worn by Joseph B. Gatewood

This flight helmet belonged to Lieutenant Joseph B. “Joe” Gatewood (1939-2016) of Hattiesburg, Mississippi, and is typical of those worn by naval aviators during the Vietnam War. Each flight helmet was painted with the squadron’s unique design and the pilot’s call sign. The yellow insignia on Lieutenant Gatewood’s helmet represents the United States Navy aviation unit VA212, nicknamed the “Rampant Raiders.”
