Purple Heart Medal awarded to Seaman First Class Robert E. Moody

Robert Edward Moody (1917-1941), of Utica, Mississippi, enlisted in the United States Navy on October 4, 1940. He served as a Seaman First Class aboard the USS Arizona (BB-39), stationed at Pearl Harbor in Hawaii. At the age of 24, Seaman Moody lost his life in the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941.

Moody was posthumously awarded this Purple Heart Medal. His name, rank, and service branch are inscribed on the back of the heart-shaped medallion. Along with the Purple Heart, Moody was also awarded the American Defense Service Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, and World War II Victory Medal.

The Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor resulted in 2,403 casualties. 1,177 died on the USS Arizona, almost half of the total casualties from the attack. Seaman First Class Moody is among the over 900 sailors and marines entombed in the battleship.
