COLD WAR

CONFRONTATION BY PROXY

Cold War | 1947 – 1991
Following the end of WWII, the United States emerged as the world’s premier military and political power. The country’s only rival was her former ally, the Soviet Union. The two nations stared each other down in the most dangerous game: the threat of nuclear war. While never an official war, the so-called Cold War dominated American foreign policy for the remainder of the 20th century. In this exhibit, walk through a recreated Cold War fallout shelter and read about two nuclear bomb detonations that occurred in Mississippi during this time.
